Glossary
Act – This means making a play such as a raise, fold, call or bet at the time required. Similar to an ‘in turn’.
Active Player - A player who is still playing for the pot in a poker game. If there are side pots then an active all in player may be involved in several, but not necessarily all of them
Bank – This is another term for the house or establishment that is in charge of running the game. The house doles out the chips, records the buy ins and pays winners after the game’s over.
Blank – Also known as a brick, bomb or rag, this is a card that has no known value and is generally a community card.
Drawing Live – In poker, this term differs from its opposite term, ‘drawing dead’. It means drawing a hand that, if successful, is likely to win the game.
Final Table – This is the last table played in a poker tourney with multiple tables involved. This is where the amount of people that have been eliminated from the tourney is sufficient to allow this table to be played. Usually fewer than 10 players must remain to declare final table.
High Hand – This is the best hand in a traditional poker game according to those values and the opposite of a lowball. This is a popular choice in high-low split games.
Kitty – This is the pool of cash that is comprised of smaller amounts coming from different pots and is normally used to buy food or drink, cards and other gaming supplies. It is a term used in home games to describe what a casino would refer to as a rake.
Multi Way Pot – This is a pot with several players competing for it. Also referred to as a family pot.
No Limit – These are rules which state that players can wager any or all of their chips on one bet alone.
One Chip Rule – Calling a previous bet by way of a chip of even higher value than needed. This is a call unless the player specifically declares it a raise.
Pre-Flop – This is the stage when all the players at a table have their pocket cards but a flop hasn’t been dealt. This is the 1st round of bets placed.
Quarter – By tying the low or the high hand in a high low split game, a player can win 25% of the pot. This is not the result most players want since they are usually putting in 33% of the pot in the hopes that they can at least with 25% back.
Rabbit Hunt – Once a hand has been completed, revealing cards that would have been dealt if the hand been continued is referred to as rabbit hunting. Casinos do not allow this since it makes the games take longer. Also known as a fox hunt.
Railbird – This is a person watching the game’s action in poker but not playing.
Satellite – A tournament where the prize is free admittance to a bigger tournament that is seen as more desirable.
