Five Card Draw
When it comes to home games, it is often Five Card Draw that is chosen as the game of choice. This is due to the fact that this poker variant is extremely easy to learn. Many people start out with Five Card Draw before they move on to other styles and, while it works in a home or college dorm setting, this game is not often played in a casino setting. Therefore, those who are looking to go pro in poker should know that a more popular casino style is probably their best bet. Still, Five Card Draw offers much in terms of helping players get familiar with the basics of a poker game so that they can hone their skills and enjoy the game with less complexities.
Usually, a game will get started after all of the players have ante’d up and put down what they are betting to get things started. After this, play takes place moving left from the dealer around the table in clockwise fashion. To start the game, each player is dealt 5 different cards, each one of the dealt face down on the table. Once the cards are all down and the rest of the deck is put somewhere else to signify that it is not the property of the other players, everyone at the table will pick up their cards and take a look at what they have while being careful not to show their hand. After this, a round of betting takes place based on the cards that each player thinks they have. The higher the hand value at the outset, the greater the chance to win the game.
As long as at least 2 players decide to stay in the game after the first round, the game continues with players exercising the ‘draw’ aspect of Five Card Draw. This is when players will, as their turn comes up, choose any cards they wish to discard back to the dealer. After those cards are put aside, they will draw the same number of new cards. Usually, in a home game setting, up to 3 cards are allowed, but this varies depending upon the crowd playing. Each round will proceed this way until all players have either folded to leave a winner or a showdown will take place where the player with the hand that has the highest value will be the winner of the pot for the game.
